Ahhh New York, the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”. If you haven’t yet been to New York, you’ve been missing out, since there truly is no city in the world quite like the city that never sleeps.
Whenever I travel to New York I like to ensure that I’ve already pre-booked my airport transfers. This is because I find it hard to function with jetlag and navigating pubic transport with all of my bags is not how I like to start my trip to the big city.
Here are just a few of the reasons why I love New York:
It truly never sleeps
Don’t get me wrong- I love Netflix and my couch as much as the next person, but when I decide to leave my house I want to be able to party properly- and that doesn’t mean leaving the bars at 1am. In New York, late-night spots are not just common- they’re the rule. You’ll find plenty of choices, including clubs, hook-up spots, cocktail and beer bars and more after 3am. This is also the place where the Manhattan was invented, and the city that made the Cosmo famous on Sex and the City, so it’s the perfect place for a girls weekend.
There’s always something to do
Whether you want to have a picnic in Central Park, play tourist and head up the Empire State Building, wander around Times Square or find a bite to eat on the side of the road, it’s impossible to be bored in New York City. I personally can’t get enough of the musicals, and with so many amazing shows on broadway, and the chance to see incredible shows like Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Wicked, I could stay busy for months.
The museums are amazing
Wandering through the Met is a must, but there’s so much more to the museum scene. Whether it’s checking out the Morbid Anatomy Museum, seeing the Whitney Museum of American Art or the Museum of Modern Art or even visiting the Guggenheim, you’ll be able to find museums devoted to almost every aspect of human life.
The food is delicious (and always available)
With around 8,000 sit-down restaurants, thousands of takeout shops and food trucks galore, one of my favourite parts about visiting New York is the access to anything I want to eat, whenever the craving strikes. Sure, there are the 24-hour diners and drive-throughs, but there are also street vendors, restaurants and delivery available whenever the mood strikes you.
There’s so much free stuff
Visit in summer and you’ll be overwhelmed by how many free activities are on offer. The River to River festival gas a huge variety of music, dance, art and theatre, Lincoln Centre Out of Doors is completely free, and so is SummerStage, which is free concerts at green spaces throughout the city. There’s also the favourite Shakespeare in the Park to look forward to as well.
