Does the thought of waking up and facing another day at work make you want to bury your head under the covers? Do you loathe your boss, dread listening to another gossip session from your coworkers, and just feel like you should be getting more from life?
You’re not alone.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that the degree we got when we were 18, the job we subsequently fell into, and the company who hired us, is all all there is in life. No one wants to admit they made a mistake, and studied for a degree because someone else told them it would be a good idea, chose a career because it had better money than their passion, and then woke up one day feeling trapped.
If you’re not sure if you’re in the right job, there are a few simple questions you can ask yourself:
What makes me happy?
This seems obvious, but we’ve been conditioned to believe that work is exactly that- work. However there are millions of people around the world who are lucky enough to be doing what they love. They’ve “cracked the code”, and discovered that their job, and what makes them happy can be be the exact same things.
Maybe you love to bake in your free time, and it’s the way you de-stress after a hard day at the office. Or maybe you’re a painter, or you’ve always wanted to work in medicine. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what your passion is, but if you think back to the happiest times in your life, they’re likely to have one thing in common-you were doing something you loved.
Can you go back to school?
The rates of adult learners entering university continue to increase each year. People are discovering that if they didn’t get their degree right the last time (or didn’t go to university), it’s never to late to get qualified for your dream career with education providers such as Careers Australia.”
Going to university as an adult will obviously be a completely different experience compared to studying in your late teens and early twenties, however you’re likely to get much better marks since you’re not there to party, and you’ll be focused on learning as much as you can.
What Career can take you into the future?
These days, it’s important to think about a career which you can do in the future. Technology has changed how we do many jobs, and has replaced workers in almost every industry.
Working with people is an excellent option, or doing something like IT or design if you love working with computers. It’s also a good idea to think about a career you can do from home, or a way to be location independent if possible.
If you’re unsure about which career could be the best fit for you, try this quiz, called “Discover Your Dream Industry”, which may help you narrow down your options.
