My top tips for travelling long term

Sick of booking short holidays and ready to head off on a long-term adventure? You’re not alone. More people are figuring out how they can work remotely and travel for years at a time- or without any end in sight. While travelling long-term can be hugely rewarding, there are also a few things you should know.

Here are my top tips for travelling long term:

Make a plan

Before you quit your job and drop everything to begin your adventure, you’ll need to make a plan. That means figuring out where you’ll base yourself when you first get started, how much you’ll need to save, and (if you want to travel indefinitely) how you’ll earn enough money to eat.

The first thing you should do is take a good, hard look at how much money you have in your bank account. Once you’ve done this, you can begin thinking about how long that money would last you overseas. For example, you could quite easily live in Southeast Asia for less than $20,000 for a year, but the same can’t be said for Western Europe.

Start booking

Once you’ve decided where you’ll start, it’s time to start booking. When I first went travelling, I had no real plan. This was fine at 23, but I wouldn’t want to do the same thing at 29. It’s important to remember that in many parts of the world, you won’t be able to find an apartment or house until you’re actually on the ground. The first thing you’ll need to book? Your flights. Browse Webjet Cheap Flights to see which airlines fly on which days, and be super flexible to get the best deals.

Have a routine

This one only applies if you’re planning to work on the road and have no intention of returning home. If this sounds like you, you’ll need to have some sort of routine that ensures you can get your work done while still exploring each new destination. For some people, that means getting up bright and early, grabbing a coffee, and getting stuck into work. For others, they prefer to explore all day and work late at night. Whatever it is, having a routine will make it much easier for you to do what you need to do.

Take vacations

This may seem strange if you’re travelling long-term, but for me, I find that I actually take less time off work when I’m working remotely. That’s why it’s a good idea to look for Webjet holiday packages and other deals, so you can actually take a break when you need to and return to work feeling refreshed.
